EVENT A BIG SUCCESS !

The first ever beach clean up organised by Green Island Dive Operators in Koh Samui was a big success.
Thanks to more then 50-60 people represented by various dive clubs, hotels, municipality and samui rescue for helping out
clean the Bang Rakh Beach in Koh Samui, South Thailand.

It all started spot on time as planned at 08.00 hrs on a nice sunny day with a briefing from Mr Ivan www.100degreeseast.com
delegating job works to people in groups of 4. The groups then departed along the beach towards both sides thus removing loads of garbage. The operation lasted 3-4 hours in which all kinds of unnatural waste was collected and then put in garbage bags to be later on collected by the Samui Municipality, who had to get the garbage truck 4 times to clear the lot.

People of various ages from children to elders participated in this event which brought them immense pleasure to see the island making progress in the positive way to becoming environment friendly.

The event ended with a thanks giving from Mr Ivan to the great job done by the volunteers and a small snack and drink setion.

I visited the beach later in the evening and was surprised to see this part of the beach which was earlier deserted due to rubbish now with a couple of people including tourist relaxing and enjoying the clean environment.

I guess job well done and Its just the beginning of other events to come during the months ahead.
Come less make the world a better place.

Finally Thai Airports free

Finally Thailand's Airports Free
After a eight days of occupation by the PAD political party and much to the relief of the entire nation finally the two major airports in Thailand are now free and under control of the AOT (Thai Airport Authorities). It will take a few days before it will be fully functional thus allowing the majority of tourist stuck by this blockade to return to their homes. Arrivals on new visitors is a big question mark as the blockade has cost in billions to the tourism industry due to major cancellation for high season The Thai Constitutional Court had dissolved the PPP and its coliation parties for election fraud resulting in the Thai PAD parties departures from the airports.

We hope that things return to normal and visitors start to come to the Land of Smiles soon.

Samui News
The weather on Tuesday was very cloudy with some occassional showers. Wednesday expereinced real good sunny day. The forecast for the upcoming week is gusty winds and big waves which is normal this time of the year.
Time for some surfing on Chaweng beach not much of diving going around. Where are the tourist ?

Mumbai Terror Attack - Ends
After 62 hours of confrontation the ordeal with the terrorist has come to end. The casualty list from this attack has been reported as death 195 and injured 300. The security forces are now carrying a thorough check of the hotels for explosives and other devices and investigation is under process.

Samui News
Rains have finally stopped since Thursday with occasional showers. Gusty winds of up to 24-26 knots are around and waves are as big as 2-3 meters guess not much of diving going on. Its expected to be like this for the week ahead.

Terror In Mumbai

The ongoing latest terror attack on Mumbai has put not only the nation but the entire world in shock. More then 130 people have been killed in separate incidences around South Mumbai area and as on now the ordeal is still going on. Hopefully the armed forces expect the siege to end soon but they are not going to hasten the operation as safety is first priority for the locals.

Political unrest - Thailand

Away from Koh Samui on my vacation its seems to be the right call for me.

From the news I have from friends and family is that Koh Samui is still experiencing heavy showers since the last week. That leaves a lot of people frustrated as the island survives on business from tourism, that suffers in such conditions as tourist seem to migrate to the west coast of Thailand for better weather.

Flooding in areas near the Laem Din Market, Boat House, Chaweng Ring Road, Lamai seems to dampen the spirits of the locals.

POLITICAL TURMOIL
The tourism industry takes a blow due to the unrest in Bangkok as the PAD democratic party stormed into the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in protest thus forcing many airlines to cancel their flights and keeping thousands of passengers stranded. It will result in many cancellation of holidays to Thailand by westerners for the upcoming high season. This will result in loss of income to the entire nation. In times when there is global recession this is the last thing Thailand needs.

Dive Condition - Down in November 2009

The South Easterly winds are hear along with the monsoons and dive conditions have deteriorated in the past few days. I have dived at Koh Tao on Monday and Wednesday and the visibility under water sucked , I estimate it to be anyway around 3-5 meters.

The forecast for the next few days have winds up to 23 knots and waves predicted as big as 2-3 meters. The dive school that I work for will be not accepting any bookings as we don't plan to go out in this conditions. That leaves me with a chance to go out of Samui for a quick vacation.

Loy Krathong in wet Samui

After 5 torturous days of continuous rains in Koh Samui finally today the showers reduced during the day with a few occasions of dry spells during the day. I did manage to venture out on my motorbike to Nathon during the day and Chaweng in the evening. Chaweng seemed to be all wet with areas near the market and the main road still flooded with the constant flow of mountain coming from the mountain.

Today also happens to be Loy Krathong - A festival celebrated annually through out Thailand. Loy means a float and Krathong means a raft about hand span diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk which is decorated with flowers, candles, incense etc. During the night many people release a small raft like this on the river or lake as a thanksgiving to the Buddha as the people believe the floating of this raft will bring good luck and happiness to them.

Due to the rains the spirit in Koh Samui might be a little lower then the usual but one thing is for sure that there would be a lot of places around where people could find enough water this year to release their floats, hopefully the celebrations might go on till late night with the rain currently stop.
